Here’s where my inspiration for this project came from: a cute DIY chalkboard and a silver leafed bombe chest:
I found the most perfect piece for the project for $10 at Goodwill. This solid wood, twin sized headboard was already primed and had hardware for hanging on the back.
First, I spray painted the main surface with chalkboard paint. I chose not to paint the sides/frame with another color but you certainly could. Next, I used a silver leaf kit purchased from Michaels (don’t forget to use a coupon – they are available on their website).
Side note: I got the Gold Leaf kit on the right solely for the adhesive, glaze, and sealer. I didn’t use the gold leaf paper for this project.
I followed the instructions on the back of the package. Basically, you apply the adhesive to the surface you want to silver leaf and allow it to dry for about 45 minutes. Then apply the silver paper to the sticky surface and press. You’ll notice when you peel the wax paper backing off that the silver leaf is slightly bubbled. I just used a foam brush to smooth it out.
As you can see, mine is imperfect with little bits of the paint underneath showing through, which I really like. It is a little time consuming. It took about two hours to do the entire frame.
Here’s how it turned out! [Note: follow the directions on the can and season the chalkboard before using it]
Have you guys used chalkboard paint or silver leafed anything? I’d love to see more inspiration. I now have some gold leaf paper to put to good use.
