I’ve been getting quotes and researching vent hoods, but figured I’d back up a little bit to discuss the overall plan for this kitchen update. I basically have two goals: 1)update the overall look of the kitchen and 2) make it more functional. So, here’s the list of things I hope to do to accomplish those goals.
- Replace cabinet doors and drawers and/or replace cabinets altogether
- Remove upper cabinets above peninsula
- Replace countertops (I discussed options here) and add a 12 inch overhang to create a counter height bar on peninsula
- Replace backsplash
- Paint: trim, doors, and new wall color
- Replace current refrigerator with counter depth model
- Replace current dishwasher
I’ve already made some decisions. For instance, I know I’m going with white cabinets and white appliances (not stainless steel – gasp!). I don’t plan to change the footprint of the kitchen and I plan on keeping my current stove and oven. But there’s still a lot of decision making to do. I don’t even know whether we will replace doors and drawers or replace cabinets altogether.
A few weeks ago, I met with the CKD (certified kitchen designer) at Home Depot and we came up with a plan. The layout is the same as my current kitchen just with updated cabinets that make better use of the space. The CKD added more functional corner cabinets, pull out drawer bins, and a lazy susan. In the view below, you can see where I will create the counter height bar area in front of the stove (but it doesn’t show the new island range hood). Instead of the backside cabinet there now, I will add a wine refrigerator.
Home Depot is offering a bunch of year end specials right now which brings just the new cabinets (maple) in this plan to right under $7500 (American Woodmark). That’s not including installation. To put that in perspective, the first quote I got (and discarded!) for cabinet refacing (new drawers, doors, and 5 pullout drawers in the pantry) came in at $13k for maple and $10k for MDF. Wowser. While $7500 is not a bad price for all new cabinets, it’s still more than I want to spend (I am doing this kitchen remodel on a crazy tight, strict budget). I am going back to meet with the CKD for another session and will continue to work on the plan.
Hopefully, now you can kinda see the vision. Stay tuned for how it all falls into place.

Sounds Beautiful and a lot of work Hope it comes to pass or do we hope for Armegedan to come first. Oh well in any case it will be beautiful.
Hey, Eieshah told me about your blog! I wanted to pass on a source for new doors that I found a few years ago when I was considering refacing my cabinets. I ended up not doing it, but I did find a really good source, I feel, for cabinet doors and drawers. The company is called Harris Door and Drawer in Buford, GA and their website is http://www.harrisdoor.com. I actually went up to their showroom and, their staff was extremely pleasant. Their prices were far more reasonable than anyone I had priced out before. (FYI– I needed 23 doors, and 7 drawer fronts and it was right under $1K including tax) And this was for solid wood doors. They sell the doors to you; I don’t think they do any installations, but double check. Oh, and the person I ended up working with was Donna Blinn. Hopefully you can check them out–from one DIY’er to the next!
Thank you very much the information! It’s so timely. I will check them out.
