This is an account of the demolition day that started our kitchen remodel. I think it’s interesting to see how things come apart. Demolition actually took much longer than they planned for because our cabinets were solid, heavy wood nailed into the wall, not screwed in. It’s as if these cabinets were not made to be removed. So they ended up sawing circles around the nails in the walls to take the cabinets out. Here you can see the wood circles with nails in them still on the wall.
The backsplash was taken off by just cutting the sheetrock right out of the wall.
I think the real game changer came when those upper cabinets above the stove were removed. That really made a world of difference. It’s an entirely new room with that opened up.
In the original plan, Day 1 would’ve ended with hanging a few of the new cabinets but that didn’t happen since it took longer to take down the old ones. At the end of the day, the kitchen was gutted and empty and the space actually seemed small. If you follow the blog on Facebook, you caught a glimpse of that at the end of the day. It’s amazing how much you can pack in a small area! See what happened next in the post detailing Days 2 and 3. See the completed project here!

It’s looking great! Isn’t it amazing how much bigger the rooms looks without cabinets? Can’t wait to see the new ones go in!
