Day 2 began with the upper cabinets being hung and progressed with all the cabinets being installed.
By the end of the day, I decided I should paint the ceiling before the crown molding, lights, and range hood were installed. That night, I ran to Home Depot to pick up ceiling paint and plastic for protection and then painted two coats. I decided to only paint the section where the new installations were occurring. It was hard to access the other half of the room since there was a bunch of cabinet contents on the floor.
There were two custom sections that were not a part of the cabinets: the microwave shelf (the microwave is now off the counter and above what I am now referring to as ‘the drink station’) and the wine refrigerator location (underneath the overhang on the peninsula).
Steven (from A Polished Finish) built these two items from scratch so they took up some time on Day 3 as well. He got a lot done: crown molding was installed, the cabinet doors were realigned, and shelves were installed inside the cabinets on the window side of the room.
Oh, the template for the counter top was taken on Day 3. They did it using thin strips of wood. They laid out the thin strips in the shape the counter would be in and used a glue gun to glue corners together. On the left side, the template shows where the overhang for the peninsula bar will be.
Remember how I mentioned the new kitchen turn around time would be 3 days? That wasn’t quite accurate. At the end of Day 3 (a Friday), the cabinets were not quite finished, we still had no counter top, which also meant no appliances or sink/plumbing. I was a little disappointed but not entirely surprised, as I expected it to take longer. Fortunately, the owner, Mark, is very reasonable to work with. They don’t usually work on Saturdays but he made arrangements for the granite counter top to be installed and for the electricians to wire the appliances. I’ll show you how it was done in the recap of Day 4.

wow – it already looks so great! I’m also super excited about the drink station!
I have serious kitchen envy. I would be spending all my time in that kitchen! 😉 Dying to see the rest.

Hah! I hope you’re not disappointed. I’ve just decided the counter next to the fridge should be termed ‘the drink station’ since that is where I will keep the electric kettle and all the coffee & tea will be in the cabinet above. When we entertain, drinks will be setup there.
Can’t wait to see it all done!! 🙂
