Upgraded!

I have been talking incessantly about all the activity in the kitchen, thanks to the complete remodel, but the kitchen hasn’t been the only room seeing some action.     Granted this upgrade is pretty minor compared to the gut job in the kitchen, I’m still really excited.

When I ordered the granite for the kitchen counter top, I also perused the remnant lots over at A Polished Finish to pick out something for the master bath vanity.   A few years back we turned an antique dresser into a bathroom vanity.  The husband tiled the top with 4×4 tumbled stone tile.  Due to lack of inspiration and motivation, the tiled top was never quite finished and then it began look worn.

My dimensions were approximately 53 inches x 20 inches so I just walked through the yard and found a remnant large enough.  The stone I chose turned out to be White Spring granite.  It has a leathered finish which I really like.  The leather finish is a matte finish and is textured.  I am told the leathering process enhances the color and better shows the characteristics of the stone.  It has an advantage over a honed finish because you don’t see any smudges or fingerprints with a leather finish.  It’s also expensive.  It adds $10-15 per square foot to the price of the granite.   But fortunately for me, someone else already paid for that and had left overs!

The coloring and veining of the stone really ties in with the dresser stain, even though I was planning on painting it before.  The new granite top cost under $200.   I’m so pleased! Here’s a closeup. Notice the matte, not shiny, polished finish.

I definitely recommend checking out remnants at your local granite yard for small jobs.   You may be surprised at what you can get for a reasonable price.
