The good news is the backsplash is DONE!!!!! The bad news is it took longer to install than the cabinets! At first, I planned to DIY the tile backsplash but due to a lot of sheetrock drama I became completely uninspired. I think the problem came in with the way the old backsplash was removed. The sheetrock (tile and all) was cut out of the wall.
In retrospect, that probably wasn’t the preferred method. The cabinets were hung before the sheetrock was repaired and thanks to crown molding they were longer (farther down on the wall) than what was there previously. The cabinet installer replaced the sheetrock but left a gap between the top of the new sheet rock and where the old sheetrock met (behind the cabinets).
Our tile installer first added additional wood (2x4s) to the wall for support.
and then installed the sheetrock again. Then, the seams and screws were taped, mudded, and lightly sanded.
After all of that, the tiling finally began. You can see that we chose the mosaic square Carrera marble in a polished finish. I LOVE IT! It ties the cabinets and counter top together beautifully.
We had tile installed on the wall above the window as well. (yes, I finally painted the window black!)
The tile has a nice sheen (sparkle) when the light catches it a certain way.
In the end, the sheetrock behind this backsplash was eventually removed and installed about three times (by different people). Our tile installer was very meticulous and did an excellent job but it took a lot longer than we anticipated.
Saying goodbye to the old ceiling fans last weekend was the last big change that had to be made. Now, we just have some touch up work to do to finish things off. It’s been pretty exciting to go through such a major transformation in just about a month. And it was a short month at that! Any major or minor changes your way?

congrats on finishing the tile! it looks very good. once again you have good vision…painting the window black adds nice contrast, I like that decision.
WOW You now have a Model Home Kitchen or should I say Model Home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has really changed the look of the past.No Kidding We are so proud of you in making such a change in such a short time span.
That looks incredible! I love that you went above the window – ours is set up just like that and sometimes I wonder what it would have looked like. Now to find my same tile again…
I love marble! and in your kitchen it looks perfect!
Loooove your new backsplash! Who made your cabinets? They are so similar to ours (Thomasville line from Home Depot). Okay, and yes, Overstock is out of control fabulous. I’ve been admiring those stools online there!
I love the tile! We have a similar backsplash in our kitchen (except it’s 3×6 marble subway tiles), I think you will love it!
This is beautiful! I love how you carried the tile all the way to the ceiling above the window. Great idea to paint the window trim black as well. It’s details like these that make such a difference.
YEAH!!! i like the pendant lighting & black accent paint on the window. very classy. no surprises there. 🙂 i’m all for display areas. the corner shelves are a great way to add pop & personal touches. congrats on the remodel. so, how does it feel to walk in there your NEW kitchen & see the fruits of all your planning? enjoy.
