The bathroom is a room where function often prevails over form. I think it’s nice to remember that you can still create functional bathroom vignettes from beautiful things you love. Our home has 2.5 baths and, with the exception of the master bathroom , they are tiny rooms. There’s very little counter space so I lean towards minimalism to keep the space from appearing cluttered.
My mom has always been good at creating nice bathroom displays with her now signature move of creating shelving over the toilet. The space above a toilet is often dead space. In the last three houses she has lived in, she’s built wood shelving units, complete with arch and crown molding, to display both pretty and functional items in the bathroom.
So, of course, I asked her to do the same for me. She built two free standing shelving units from basic wood boards purchased at Home Depot and then A. mounted them on the wall in two of our three bathrooms. I am still figuring out how I want to style them, and I am taking some cues from her.
In the main bath that guests use, my mom has a beach theme going with the shells and sea motif. On the counter next to the sink, a white ceramic shell holds wash cloths and a clear glass box (it has a glass top – how cute!) holds cotton balls and q-tips. A marble toothbrush holder and a small dish, to hold small items like jewelry, are also out on the counter and are both pretty and functional. I like the use of a larger white ceramic basket positioned on the back of the toilet to hold larger hand towels, even though this particular bathroom has a good amount of cabinetry under the sink and behind the door.
I like observing what particularly strikes me about certain bathroom vignettes as I still have some (a lot!) of tweaking to do with my own bathroom shelves. What about you? How do you display beautiful yet functional items in your bathroom?

i am working on the same thing right now for our guest bathroom (well, it is really just a guest sink). i love the bathroom above because it is so white and clean looking. we recently found inspiration from hotel bathrooms and will be looking for pretty pieces to use functionally. great pictures!
Oh so pretty ha ha
I love this idea so much. Its even great for a small bath with little storage to place facial tissue with nice eye candy. Thanks for sharing.
It’s my mom’s great idea. 🙂 I just rearranged the shelves in my half bath and things are looking better. Maybe I’m getting the hang of it. I’ll have to blog about it soon.
