It’s been a year since I made a concerted effort to add plants to our home. I don’t have much of a green thumb and our house doesn’t have a lot of natural light, so I tried to find plants that would work well with those two conditions. Last year, I talked about which plants I chose and where I placed them so I thought I’d follow up with how they are doing.
I have managed to kill succulents. I have heard about how they are so easy to have and grow but I have had a few die in the past year. Remember this cute one?
As of last month it’s gone.
And the fern I thought would do well in low light lost all of it’s leaves. I put it outside in hopes of reviving it.
I am happy to report that the snake plants, pothos, and the ZZ plant are doing great! I think these are my favorite because they don’t require much and seem to forgive imperfect conditions.
And the rubber plant that I thought would be finicky (since it started losing leaves when I put it in the dining room) is also surviving! I water that one by pouring water into the little plastic container the plant sits in (instead of on top of the open soil) and letting the roots soak it up.
The burro tail, a succulent, while not thriving, is hanging in there too. Maybe it’s because I put it outside for the summer months and brought it in for winter. This plant is just so cute, but very fragile. I even split it up into different pots.
The dracaena plant has brown leaves but I don’t think all is lost. I’ve just recently put it back outside so it can get more light.
I water the indoor plants once a week but the outdoor plants definitely need watering every few days. I had a container herb garden last year and hope to have another this summer. I better get started soon!
Are you good with plants? Any tips or suggestions?

I’m with you! Very little natural light and very little ability to grow plants. I have taken full advantage of the 1 year warranty on Lowe’s plants. Though I’ve had a peace lily in my underlit family room for about 7 months and it’s doing really well. The leaves droop heavily when it needs to be watered and then they perk right back up about an hour after watering.
Thanks for sharing this! I am new to the plant world and although I’m sad that some of your plants didn’t make it, I’m glad to know that it’s okay!!! I’m hoping for the best!
I came over from YHL and had to check out the rest of your blog. Your house is stunning and I love the mix of bright and calm. It’s great!
This post hit home with me. We had a snake plant at our old house and it somehow got slugs in it. It was so gross! It eventually rotted and became mush. I love the look though so I’m tempted to get another one and try it in our new house. I haven’t had the best luck over the years either but I do seem to keep some ivys and I’ve had a jade plant for awhile. It’s seen better days but jades are super sensitive to moves and it’s been moved a few times. A Christmas cactus is easy too. We’ve actually left ours in the original cheap container for years and it’s surviving well. Good luck with your future plants!!
Thank you for your comments Megan. I am not good with plants, but plan to keep my blog updated with what works out!
