Last year, I switched out our stack of white dinner and dessert plates. They had two problems. 1. The dinner plates were on the small size. They must’ve been 7 or 8 inches. 2. They were stoneware so they had gray scratches where the silverware scraped against them. I don’t like seeing those scratches! (I think they can be removed with certain cleaners though.)
So, I set out to find a new set of white dishes. I stuck with white because I feel like even if pieces break and you don’t have matching everything (cups, plates, bowls) you can easily combine different sets for a uniform, cohesive look. I did not want stoneware again so I looked for porcelain. Porcelain and bone china don’t suffer from the gray scratch malady. I found this set by Roscher at HomeGoods on the clearance rack. I think the dinner plates, which are nice and large at 14 inches, were $3 and the dessert plates were $2. HomeGoods didn’t have the matching cups though.
I picked up a few mismatched white coffee cups from Goodwill (for $2 total) and they go with the set just fine.
So, that’s our everyday tableware. Our wedding china is also white but a little bit dressier with platinum striping. It’s stored on the upper shelves of the glass fronted cabinets since we don’t use it daily. Have you picked out new dinnerware recently? Did you go with white, a vibrant color, a pattern? We recently had to supplement our silverware too. I don’t know how all the forks disappeared!

your dishes are great!
i just discovered the beauty of simple white plates. i was at HomeGoods as well and I found an 80 piece set of dishes including 8 place settings of 10 pieces for only $59. i thought something must be wrong with it but all the dishes seem great. i was super excited as it meant i didn’t have to buy anything else for a little while! it was a great starter set since we just got married and did not receive a lot of registry gifts. Hubby and I usually use paper plates to avoid doing a lot of dishes so they haven’t exactly gotten a ton of use, but we just had guests over and they looked great and are super practical. I agree that white is a fabulous choice and it will be easy to add/replace only certain parts in the future. i will probably replace the glasses and silverware that came with it first, but really for now it is absolutely fine.
