Last time I talked about our home office, I’d just hung the new curtains. After that, I got to work on a super easy project: a fabric covered corkboard. I bought the corkboard from Michaels (using a coupon) and the fabric from Hobby Lobby (also using a coupon). It’s the same fabric on my dining room chairs. I was glad to be able to incorporate it in another room. I think the pattern has impact but is not too busy, and it’s not too feminine so it works for an office that is for both of us.
I just placed the fabric over the board and pushed in 150 tacks on the inside of the wood frame perimeter. Once that was done, I flipped it over and used a staple gun to staple the fabric to the back of board. I installed my own hanging hardware, two eyelet screws and wire. It didn’t take long at all and looks so much better than a plain cork board.
When I started putting the room back together, I realized I would need more lighting. After looking around at a few stores (see a few contenders here), I stopped at a garage sale, saw this brassy set with a classic shape for $8/pair, and decided I could make them work.
I even liked how they looked with just the primer.
But I went ahead with a super bold color and I’m loving it: Rustoleum’s Gloss Apple Red
It reminds me of this lamp from Target.
It’s nice to get a similar look for less, as those would’ve set me back $100 for two.
Overall, these were two really easy projects that didn’t take a lot of time or money. Remember, part of the challenge in the office is to spend as little as possible. So, here’s the running total with these latest updates added in:
Wall Paint – $33
Curtains – $11
Corkboard – $8
Tacks – $2
Fabric – $5
Garage sale lamps – $8
Spray Paint – $4
Total: $71
Now, I need to find two white drum shades (the one above is borrowed from another lamp) and hang some ‘must stay’ (as indicated by the husband) art.
Have you finished up any easy projects? I like the sense of accomplishment in a short amount of time!

I love the bright, bold red spray paint on the lamp. I used the exact same fabric to recover the corkboard in my kitchen, only the colors were inverted. Very cute office makeover!

Oh my gosh that looks awesome! The color is fabulous! I really need to start finding potential in things that can look beautiful with a little makeover. It looks like too much fun. And maybe it will save me from throwing out a bunch of my own stuff! 🙂 I would love if you shared this at my Throwback Thursday party. I hope to see you there! Thanks for sharing 🙂 http://www.hubbymademe.com/throwback-thursday-no-5/
Jae,
That looks really awesome. Where did you get the shade from? I’ve been looking for a white drum shade that can fit on the harp for a long time. All the shades are target fit to the bottom of the harp and not top.
The shade pictured is from Goodwill, but I bought new shades from Lowes and removed the harp because they also fit to the bottom. Ikea has shades that fit to a harp though. This shade is available by itself in the store for $10.
Hope that helps!
Love lamp make-overs! There are so many possibilities and you can get such a great, unique piece – like your bright red lamp! Looks great on your desk.
I did the same thing with “Hammered Metal” paint. My boyfriend and I loved the shape of the lamp but the brass was hideous! It looks amazing now! So simple and CHEAP!!
Oh, the lamps! They look amazing! I have some sitting in my garage right now, and I’ve been wanting to spray paint them. I have to conquer my fear of spray paint sometime soon!
Thanks Kristen. I know what you mean, spray paint is hit or miss for me. The lamps came out ok, but some recent projects the finish was just off!
