This is a simple project that came about due to an accident. We had a broken tile in the half bath and once it was replaced and regrouted, we realized the grout from our kitchen backsplash was used by accident. The light gray grout used in the kitchen was a stark contrast from the darker grout used on the bathroom tile floor.
At first, I planned to fix the light grout to match the rest of the floor. But before I did that, I realized I liked the lighter grout. It just looked cleaner. I picked up Polyblend Grout Renew in Snow White from Home Depot. I used a small container to hold the product, a toothbrush, and wet paper towels. It’s a painstaking task but fortunately the room is small and I only had a small area to do. It’s easier if you do one grout joint and then wipe the excess off the tile while it’s still wet. You just have to go slowly, one section at a time.
You can change the color of grout altogether, as I did, or just refresh your current color if the grout lines are stained or dirty. It’s a great solution for updating a floor, shower, or backsplash.
This turned out to be a happy accident because the floor looks so much better. What have you refreshed or renewed lately? Had any accidents that led to a better solution?

It looks great! I’ve never renew grout before. I was wondering if you had to remove any old grout to put the new one in or did you just put it on top of the old grout? Thanks.
Nope, I didn’t remove any old grout. The instructions on the bottle indicate you need to clean the grout first but that’s it. After cleaning I just put it on top of the old.
Okay thanks for replying! I’m gonna try it! 🙂
That’s fantastic and we can even find it at our HD here in Canada.
Now the big question; we have some tiles that cracked and need replacing so….want to show us how you did that? Thanks !!
Great question Sharon. Sorry. I wish I could but unfortunately did not take pictures! It was just one tile (12×12) in the corner (where the plant is in the pic above). Used a chisel to cut/break out the one tile and then put down the mortar/mastic and laid down the new tile. That dried in place overnight and then grouted just two lines/joints (since the tile butted up to a corner). The grout was the wrong color which led to the solution above.
Thanks…this will be my next project in my guest bathroom. I love projects I can do myself and save $$$. Thanks for sharing.
I had no idea such a product existed. Thanks for sharing. My husband is going to be excited to find it will color AND seal the grout.
Did you clean it with the product they recommend on the back of the bottle or with something else?
I used a regular tile & grout cleaner I already had. I haven’t had any problems so far.
Thanks J! I just did my bathroom and it looks awesome!
When I used the polyblend from Home Depot a few years ago, did not wipe off excess from tile with paper towel. Now it is difficult to remove from tile since I have redecorated entire bath and caulked tub, painted room and want to fix the tile the way it should look; like yours. How can I get the messy looking dried on polyblend off of shower tile joints and where it sloppily shows on tile as a messy overlap? Do I need the tool advertised on internet that professionals use; paint stripper? Have tried pumie stone, borax, flat screwdriver to score (small area only), steel wool. Can this project be done easily? What can you think of that would take the polyblend off? I just want the project to look neat and well done like your’s in the illustration.
You could try paint thinner or anything else that removes paint.
