Silver to Gold to Old

I had this empty frame hanging in the guest room (the old blue room) on the wall above the dresser.   When I revamped the room, I took everything off of the walls and considered which items would find a place in the new room. At the time, I was pretty sure the frame had not made the cut.  But, since I’m a big fan of upcycling and using what you already have, I like to put things I’m not using in a staging pile before getting rid of them altogether.

When I hung my already framed, original painting I remembered that I had this silver frame.   I selected another one of my original paintings (painted as a teenager), and found it was a perfect fit for it.  The only problem was silver didn’t really complement the pieces already hanging in the room.  That was an easy fix though:  a can of spray paint to the rescue. I sprayed the frame with Krylon’s Antique Gold.    The result was a little too brassy and bright though.

I rummaged through my paint stash and found a small bottle of brown antiquing glaze.   Using a foam brush, I spread the glaze over the frame, making sure to push the glaze deep in the crevices.   The result is that the frame went from looking a little too new to more subdued or aged.

I bought canvas clips to mount the canvas to the frame, but I couldn’t get them to work. The canvas kept falling out. So I used a completely unprofessional solution:  gorilla tape.  I taped the canvas to the frame on each side and it is held in place rather well.

Here’s how it all looks hung on the wall in the guest room.   I actually hung the two paintings staggered next to each other to help deal with the TV on the dresser.  I’m glad I finally have some of my own artwork, that has been stored away for years, hanging on the wall!
