Both of our guest bathrooms have my mom’s signature shelving above the toilet. It has become somewhat of a tradition that she builds these small units to place in the bathrooms of the houses she’s lived in through the years. So, of course, I asked her to build some for me as well. She built them several years ago and A mounted/hung them and I painted them.
I painted the shelves with two coats of Behr’s semi-gloss paint in Ultra White but after awhile I noticed some of the wood knots began to bleed through. I did absolutely nothing about it but when I recently added my newly framed card to the shelves I finally decided to correct the situation. See all those brown spots where knots bled through?
I pulled out the can of Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer that we used down in the basement and painted over all the knots. Once that dried, I repainted with Behr’s semi-gloss again. So far, so good. Hopefully, that primer sealed the spots enough so we don’t experience any more bleed through.
I also took the opportunity to do some rearranging. I haven’t mastered shelf arranging yet. Still tweaking. I may even paint the backs a different color. But here’s where I ended up.
And since the guest bathroom upstairs had the same situation with wood bleed through, I did the same up there and did a little rearranging as well.
Have you mastered the art of styling shelves? Have you updated anything with paint lately?

Great shelving styling!! You sell yourself short. They look clean, uncluttered but still very interesting.
Wow! Never would’ve expected such a comment. Thanks. Welcome back to this side of the world! 🙂
Thanks. It feels good but weird to be back 🙂
But seriously, the art hung/placed on the backs look so good.
PERFECT.
This brought a smile to my face. they are looking great. You have come a long way baby. Ha ha
Love this idea. This would be a great idea in my daughters/guest bathroom. Another idea I’m going to use….thanks for sharing.
