I saw this pin and decided to try it out myself. So, I collected the three ingredients…
- Borax powder (Target – $2.99)
- Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (Publix – $3.99)
- Fels-Naptha laundry bar (Publix – $0.99)
… and got to shredding the bar of soap.
I stirred 1.5 cups of Borax and 1.5 cups of washing soda in with the soap and put it in a covered jar and that was it.
I’ve done a few loads of laundry and it seems to work well. I also happen to like the smell of the Fels Naptha. Super easy and saves money! Do you have any DIY detergent recipes that work well? Let me know!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend,

Interesting. Doesn’t seem any less expensive than just buying ready made detergents….and how does it work for machines that recommend high efficiency detergents?
In my experience it has been much cheaper. The ingredients are about $5-6 total and it lasts a long time. The detergent I used to buy was always twice that for about 30-40 loads.
It’s perfect for HE machines because the key with HE machines is not to generate alot of suds, and this detergent does not.
I like to make our own laundry soap as well but to give it a good sent I like to use Irish Spring soap. 😉 But my husband likes to use Ivory soap with a few drops of pure lavender oil.
would the ivory soap or irish spring soap leave a residue on dark clothes? even if you use very little soap.. plus dark clothes use cold water. how did you combat that?
