You know I like bowls. I’m just drawn to them. One day I came across this image and discovered it was homemade. Of course I wanted to try it myself! Why wouldn’t I want my own cutie pie bowl?
So I followed the lovely directions and gathered my ingredients.
I mixed them all together.
And achieved the ‘mashed potato’ consistency…
I allowed it to cool and formed a ball to work with.
I used a bowl to form the shape and dried in the oven at 150 degrees.
But of the two I made, this is what I ended up with: a crumbled messand a huge crack.
Bummer. Have you made your own clay? What did I do wrong?

did you figure out what you did wrong? i really like that clay bowl. when you get the bugs worked out let me know. this is a craft project i would like to do.
The thing about homemade clay (I do this all the time) is the way you bake it. Form the same that you want… When you bake it, do it at the lowest temperature you oven will go on…the lower the better. It may take a lot longer for it to harden, but it is less likely to crack…I have two homemade clay sculptures in the over right now… =) hope it helps.
Yes, ANYTHING helps! Thanks so much for your reply!
Also, if that dosent help, try a different recipe. I used flour, salt and water. Its easy to work with…and mold to the perfect shape. Make sure your hands are always wet. You dont want the dough to be to wet, dont add water to the dough, but to your hands, or tool you are working with. I made a bowl, with African animals along the edges.
4 cups of water
1 cup of salt
1 and a half cups of water.
if its to hard, then add a tiny tiny bit of water till its a little more mushy. you do not want it to be like mashed pataos. more like dough. It will be grainy from the salt, but its okay. kneed it well and when not using wrap with plastic wrap and stick in the fridge. the great thing, is if it comes out of the oven with a few cracks, just add a little water, work it perfection and bake some more.
