I’ve kind of always thought the dining room should have a rug but man, rugs are hard. It’s hard to find the right one for the right price. We have a 60 inch round table with seating for 6 in the dining room. I didn’t want a rug that was too small, so that it looked silly and chairs were uneven (half on the rug, half off) when people were seated at the table. And should I go with a round rug or regular ol’ rectangular rug? Either way, it would have to be LARGE. And large rugs often = expensive. And what about material? A rug underneath a table used for eating would need to be stain friendly and easy to clean.
Cowhide rugs kind of break all the rules. I don’t think they have to be as large because they have wavy edges. They’re also very thin so they don’t create an imbalance if furniture is placed half on/half off. I love the cream/white hides, but I imagined the black and white would also look great in our red dining room. Once I decided on that, the only thing left to do was to actually find one at an affordable price. Amazon has several. Ikea sells them too but I’ve noticed they’re mostly white with black spots. Last fall, we found a seller on the side of the road who had beautiful rugs but I was uninspired by the price. I haven’t been on the hunt for one, so it figures that I found one at Scott’s last weekend! One of the vendors had a big booth with hides, pillows, furniture. The cream ones were beautiful and they were $600! I found a silky Brazilian black and white one for less than the Ikea price. People seem to either love them or hate the idea of them, I realize it’s a personal choice, but I love it. It’s great in the dining room. From everything I’ve read, they are so durable and extremely hard to stain. Check out the comments here.
Would you ever have a cowhide rug? Or have you found any other fabulous rugs lately?

YUMMY to the rug. It is a FABULOUS addition to an already lovely space!!!! I wish I had a space for one…cuz I do love them too.
what about underneath your own dining or kitchen table?
Where did you get your table?
Craigslist. Here’s how it looked originally: https://b.designocd.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/round-table-1024×768.jpg
I had it refinished in black paint.
Great job! Guess I need to start looking myself! Any downfall for having a large base vs “legs”?
Not that I can tell, I actually prefer the one base!
