We’re kind of in the market for a new couch. Our living room couch is 12 years old and the cushioning is on it’s way out. The couch still looks good but when you sit in it, you sink in further than you used to. We want something with a hardwood (not soft wood) sturdy frame, firm springs, and preferably down filling for the back cushions. And of course we want all of that but not necessarily the high price that usually accompanies it.
I’d prefer something that’s sort of a cross between traditional and modern. We both prefer leather and I prefer squared off arms, instead of rounded, detached back cushions and 3 separate seat cushions instead of 2. I started looking casually a few months ago and found it can kind of be a tough search.
I immediately liked the Collins couch from Restoration Hardware. I like the leather, the seat depth, and love the nailheads.
I also like Crate & Barrel’s Axis couch. I like the leather and it’s comfortable. The problem is it does not come in the dimensions we need.
I found out about about Decades, a furniture company by the Hazards and think I may have found a contender. They do custom furniture at retail prices. I like everything about the Blythe sofa except for the rolled arms. They offer design consultations too, just send them an email with your room and couch information. Still working out the details – will keep you posted with what we finally end up with!
Have you been couch shopping recently? Which manufacturers were your favorite? Any tips or advice?

Update: Here’s what we ended up with!
i agree with you it’s so tough to find a new couch!! we recently went through this and i almost got stress about my search, but then i decided to relax about it. we went with a bold color but i think the lines are clean and i love the arms. i agree square are better than round. ours actually have a wonderful wide flat surface on the arms and you feel ok to set stuff on them if you need to.
Loooove the first one. We went through the same thing for our family room leather sectional earlier this yr. We had a local chain called Jennifer Leather that had some great couches.
This is a long shot, how is your decades sofa (now Rogers+Chris) holding up, i will be placing an order with them soon. Thanks.
It’s wearing very well! Still love it and still looks good. The only thing I would do differently is custom order the back cushions to be completely covered in leather. The backs of the cushions are fabric and the leather only goes 1/4 down. I would like to be able to flip them around to the other side, but instead I fluff them from time to time and it’s fine. I am glad with the decision to go with 2 cushions instead of 3.
