A less than happy accident occurred right before the trip to Jamaica. One evening, I heard some sort of minor commotion in the office closet. The next day when I went to retrieve my camera bag to take some pictures for the blog I realized what that commotion must’ve been. The camera bag happened to be unzipped and my Nikon D40 had a freak accident that resulted in a cracked LCD screen. Sadness.
Because I wanted to be sure I had a camera for the trip, I immediately started researching a replacement. I had the D40 for four years and used it for all the pictures on this blog. Four years ago when I was shopping, I found Ken Rockwell’s site extremely helpful. I went back there to read about the latest Nikon models. If you are in the market for any kind of camera (point & shoot, DSLR, etc) I highly recommend his site. I ended up getting a Nikon D3100 from Amazon. I chose the 3100 because the 3200 just came out thus making the previous model go on sale. I’m excited because it has HD video capabilities. The D40 and D3100 are similar but I’m still getting use to the slight changes.
As for the D40, I decided to fix it in order to sell it. I ordered three parts: the LCD display screen, the glass cover, and the tape used to affix the glass ((1K087-760 (the window) and 1K104-529 (the tape).) I first called Nikon to order parts but they are no longer selling to individuals. I ordered from Amazon and eBay. The parts totaled about $40, which is not too bad considering I received a quote from a camera repair guy for $120. I sent this video to the husband and he replaced the parts for me. ALL FIXED!
I was surprised by the great response on Craigslist. It is SOLD! Have you found a good resource for camera info? Any unexpected upgrades lately?

We also bough the D3100 after reading all the reviews online. Great camera. We had a similar unfortunate accident with our point and shoot. So we now have to rely on the DSLR for everything. The only complaint I have is that the zoom for the std lens that it comes with is dismal. We ended up buying a lens with larger zoom capabilities.
I have a 55-200mm zoom lens as well. I bought it with the D40.
