This is a mood board I put together for a friend’s entry, living, and dining room. The house has an open floor plan and when you walk in the front door you see the dining room to the left and the living room straight ahead. The homeowner is working on these spaces in phases and initially just wanted a plan that incorporated her current furniture and current wall color. Basically, this plan is how to update a space with accessories: art, lighting, rugs, and window treatments. It assumes the walls are already painted and all the main pieces of furniture are already present. The dining set and black couch picture represent what she already has. The idea is for the blue/teal color to unify the two rooms.
Color palette: beige, cream, blue/teal.
1. Because this plan assumes keeping the current furniture, slipcover the club chair with a neutral, lighter color. The one pictured here is from SureFit, but Overstock has other options.
2. Additional lamps allow you to adjust the lighting and mood in the room. A teal base with white shade would be great. Mercury glass or a silver metallic finish would also work. Specific options: HomeGoods, Marshalls, and TJ Maxx have vases similar to the one pictured here for reasonable prices.
3. A plush, light colored rug will add comfort, coziness, and help with a light and airy feel by brightening up the room. Pictured: Rugs USA Moroccan Diamond Shag Grey Rug
4. A round ottoman breaks up the angles and squares and adds function as a both a coffee table (with a tray on top) and extra seating when needed. Options include: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Safavieh-Harrison-Beige-Single-Tray-Storage-Ottoman/7388215/product.html
5. Adding a side table adds function to the room, giving you a place for remotes and drinks. The one pictured here is from Amazon, but Target has a similar product.
6. Pillows are a great way to accessorize and it’s easy to swap them out when you want to change color scheme. Marshalls, HomeGoods, and Target are great places to look for inexpensive pillows. Specific options: The pillows pictured here are from World Market and Etsy.
7. Mirror over the fireplace. The added benefit is that the mirror will also reflect light. Specific options: Amazon has this one. Marshalls, HomeGoods, and Target also are great resources for mirrors.
8. Extra seating – this chair replaces the current old recliner when the homeowner is ready.
9. Art! Keep things cohesive by having all frames of the same color (suggested: silver or white white). To cut back on costs, you can spray paint some of the frames you already own or buy from the thrift store. Ikea has two great sizes represented here. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80243542/#/40168318
On the wall above the tv: two oversized/blown up favorite photographs framed in silver frames.
On the wall above the couch: how about abstract pieces? You can even DIY this for an original piece!
On the wall leading to bedrooms: Oversized clock and wall treatment (ex: polka dots or stripes)
On the dining room wall: series of 4-6 large Ribba frames with either a favorite fabric (shower curtain?!) or blue/teal prints

10. Create a more functional entry area. Setup the entry wall with a bench, mirror to check yourself on the way out the door and a little tray/catchall for keys, mail, and purse. A bar tray with a just a few ingredients to make a quick cocktail would also be lovely on top of the buffet that’s already there.
11. Curtains for dining room window. Hang 2 panels on each side. Specific options: You can’t beat Ikea for inexpensive curtains. You can always return them if you don’t like them. The ones pictured are from Overstock.
Lastly, add additional color through accessories (on your dining table, side table, etc) and have fun!
